The Scottish Mining Museum is a fantastic source of information from which all age groups can learn a great deal. The attraction sucessfully covers educational levels from primary through secondary to university level. The first exhibition - The Story of Coal - presents the formation of coal and its locations and the developments man has made through the ages to extract it. The second exhibition - A Race Apart - tells the story of the lives of miners, their families and communities and the wide range of political and social issues they had to face. The Magic Helmet tour retraces the footsteps made by generations of miners through the original workings of the pit, meet our guides who will recount their experiences and knowledge. The Operations Centre looks at the science involved in mining. It is designed to compliment the 5-14 curriculum and each activity encourages creative thinking as well as dealing with the scientific and technical issues.
Education Packs are available for teachers with a series of photocopiable worksheets. There is also a research library and a handling collection, that can be used during a visit or taken away and returned later.
